The 11th annual BC Arts & Culture Week wrapped up on April 24th. Many schools and arts councils around the province took part. From the Arty Awards in Abbotsford to a school tour of the north by Vancouver dance company Joe Ink, citizens and students across BC got engaged in arts activities that connected them with their local communities.

In record breaking numbers, families poured into the ArtStarts gallery for a performance by popular local artists, Bobs and Lolo. Kids sang and danced to a number of songs, using movement and imagination to celebrate the natural world.

Students at Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver concluded a special music project with a concert at their school Friday afternoon. Working with a composer-in-residence, several world music experts, and mentors from Sinfonia Orchestra, a group of students collaborated over several months to create cross-cultural musical works that reflect their ideas on matters of cultural understanding, pluralism and community building.

The Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland visited ArtStarts this weekend to participate in their first ever Art Crawl. Participants had tours of both the Contemporary Art Gallery and ArtStarts, where they checked out the Creative Connections exhibition.

For many years, ArtStarts has brought together artists and school district delegates from around BC for our exciting Spring Showcase. The event helps arts programmers select from a diverse range of professional arts groups when booking performances for young audiences in their communities. However, after careful consideration, ArtStarts has decided to postpone our April 2010 Showcase until February 2011.

Howard Jang, director of Arts Club Theatre Company, stopped by this afternoon to present a cheque to ArtStarts on behalf of the TELUS Vancouver Community Board, of which he is a member. The Board has generously offered to renew its sponsorship of the ArtStarts on Saturdays Series. This means we will be continuing to offer free, artist-led workshops to families & kids in the downtown Vancouver area next year!

This morning excited students from Vancouver's Lord Roberts Elementary visited the ArtStarts gallery to get a glimpse of where their artwork will soon be exhibited. Three classes will be working with artist Julian Lawrence throughout the fall to produce a comic book project reflecting their connections to the spirit of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Michael Mitchell gets kids dancing to songs about Canadian history!

Seasoned children's performer Michael Mitchell visited the ArtStarts gallery on Saturday to perform some songs about Canadian history! He got kids stomping around like prehistoric dinosaurs, paddling an imaginary canoe through the Land of the Silver Birch, and waltzing like Log-Drivers on the Ottawa river.

Flutter, Hum, Buzz...

Yesterday the ArtStarts gallery was visited for a second time by a group of 3/4 students from Graham Bruce Elementary, here to view a display about their completed project Flutter, Hum, Buzz: An Artful Garden Party. The project was the result of an artist residency by Lori Weidenhammer, who helped the students to learn that art is more than painting and sculpture, and that the raw materials for artistic expression can be found all around them.

This afternoon, ArtStarts staff joined protesters at the Vancouver Art Gallery in support of the fight against recent cuts to the Arts in BC. Concern and outrage was voiced by a number of noted figures in the Arts community.

SWARM takes ArtStarts by storm!

What an exhilarating performance by Vancouver's very own hyper- kinetic percussion troupe SWARM! The group offered a unique hands on experience filled with fun, music and movement. Kids learned action drumming using funky recycled instruments such as rubber tubing, garbage can drums and even rubber duckies and chickens. Parents and kids leaving the event told us it was a blast, so awesome, and that they i loved it all!

My volunteering experience at ArtStarts

For a while now, I've been saying to whomever wants to hear it, that the highlight of my week is coming to ArtStarts to volunteer a few hours. It's not because of the work I do here, since being a volunteer implies that I don't have a position with responsibilities that demands much creativity, I do basic office work and help a bit with gallery strikes and set-ups. Nonetheless, everything I do here I like very much.

ArtStarts welcomes a new member to the team: Rekha Pavanantharajah, our exuberant summer intern will be staying on throughout the year to help at the front desk and at ArtStarts on Saturdays. Rekha AKA "Rex" enjoys the warm, supportive environment at ArtStarts, and all of the awesome people she gets to interact with. Outside of work hours, she spends her time studying at SFU, practicing yoga, reading books, watching movies and painting.

Vancouver Opera in Schools' Education Manager, Patrick Le Blanc stopped by ArtStarts for a visit late this afternoon. It'll be another exciting year for the Vancouver Opera, as they are en route across the province with their show "Jack Pine," an operatic performance that explores issues of self-esteem and the environment.

Creative Connections. Program Coordinator Katie Varney worked hard with the help of staff and volunteers, including the above handyman extraordinaire, to install this exhibition. The exhibition runs until December 18 2009 and features insightful work from some of BC's youngest artists as they reveal their world through art.

Children and parents were captivated by popular children's entertainer Art Napolean at the ArtStarts in Schools Saturday series on June 27th. Art's performance was fun and interactive, which kept the audience interested as he playfully taught kids Cree chants, drumming and traditional stories ending in a friendship dance.

Staff, board, and volunteers wined, dined and enjoyed good conversation at the ArtStarts gallery last Friday. ArtStarts celebrated another successful year of artistic creativity while honoring our wonderful volunteers.

Over 1000 women and men packed the glittering hall of the Westin Bayshore on June 3rd for a gala-gala-do that feted some of the city’s most outstanding women. ArtStarts Executive Director, Wendy Newman was one of the nominees in the Arts, Culture & Design category for her lifelong dedication to the arts including the establishment of the ArtStarts gallery for young people’s art.

Peals of laughter rang through the gallery as 60 grade 3/4s from Graham Bruce Elementary took part in a gallery tour followed by a session of timed, blind contour drawing, which aims to free up the drawing juices.

Both children and parents shook it up and stretched it out at the May 30th Move it Show. The Joe Ink workshop was stimulating and interactive for kids and allowed their parents to bring out their inner child as they joined in the live dance performance. Energetic lead dancers Jacci and Barb encouraged everyone to be a "super dancer" as they coached participants to follow the magic hand, do the robot or paint the bubble.

It's that time of the year again! With only a month left of Regional Voices (on until June 27), planning is underway for our next exhibition, Creative Connections. This exhibition will feature insightful work from some of BC’s youngest artists as they reveal their world through art.

Free performing arts workshops for families

Free performing arts workshops for families

Starting January 31st, ArtStarts is presenting a free performance series for families in Vancouver's downtown area. "ArtStarts on Saturdays" will kick off with a workshop by circus artist Sand Northrup AKA One Woman Circus, who will introduce youngsters to circus skills including feather balancing, juggling, rola bola and plate-spinning.

Iskwew, a trio of First Nations women, who perform in the plains and West Coast traditions toured the Stikine and the Kootenays with ArtStarts in November and got an early welcome to winter.
